After receiving an invitation from an old family friend, the party arrive to Kosaten Shiro in Crane lands to find the former Daidoji military stronghold’s defenses in disrepair after the current Lord’s preference for arts and beauty over martial affairs.
Border skirmishes with the neighboring Lion Clan had caused Sokazaka to suddenly increase the taxes double the amount of Ashigaru in order to bolster the defenses of the castle. This in turn has caused an unrest to appear in the peasantry, who fear that the increased taxes and lack of workforce might affect the harvest.
Kuni Aya, a visiting Witch Hunter, has requested two of the players (Asako Otojiro and Kitsune Diuroku) to help in her investigation of a supposedly maho ritual that takes place every month in the village, as Lord Sokazaka has proven to be against allowing the investigation.
Daigotsu Agra had a somewhat comical encounter with Yogo Tanaka, a Scorpion Magistrate who claims to be here for relaxation. He however was well informed about the rumors in the town, and was willing (perhaps too eagerly) to listen to any stories from the party.
A Day in Court
The party chose to present themselves to the Lord of Kosaten Shiro during open Court. Yoritomo Kobuo found himself doubting the security of the castle, as he believes the Lord is too lenient; and requested to be allowed to further investigate the rumored Lion-Crane conflicts in the borders and the increasing peasant unrest. Meanwhile, Otojiro and Diuroku has managed to receive approval for a simple and discreet investigation in order to satisfy Kuni Aya’s curiosity.
